Speech & Language
Cambridge School offers a full range of services to support children who experience speech and language challenges, have social difficulties, or require occupational therapy.
Students with language-based learning differences often present with a complex array of symptoms and characteristics. There is a high co-occurrence of learning differences, such as dyslexia, with language impairment, speech sound disorders (Boada et al., 2012)and Developmental Language Disorder (Bishop et al.,2017) While not every student with a learning difference will experience these added speech and language challenges, research indicates that they are common. With that in mind, many Cambridge School students benefit from the additional support that speech and language therapy provides.
The speech and language pathologists at Cambridge School work to develop intensive, individualized treatment programs that are tailored to meet each child’s unique challenges. Our ASHA-certified speech and language pathologists have experience with a range of pediatric speech and language disorders, including:
Articulation delays/disorders
Childhood apraxia of speech
Central auditory processing disorders
Cognitive impairments
Developmental Language Disorder
Executive function challenges
Nonverbal learning disorder
Reading comprehension challenges
Receptive and expressive language delays
Social skills/social communication impairments
Specific language impairments
Stuttering and dysfluency
Working memory impairments
Written expression difficulties
Our speech and language therapy process is built on an ongoing relationship between the therapist, student, parent, and teachers. Our SLPs have a daily presence in the school, which allows for effective collaboration between students, teachers, and administration. The delivery of services is provided in the manner that is most beneficial to each student’s needs, which can range from individual 45-minute therapy sessions, to small group therapy sessions, or “push-in” therapy provided in the classroom.
In addition to our full range of therapy services, the department offers the CompleteSpeech SmartPalate program, an electropalatography program designed specifically for students who have persistent articulation challenges.
